3 Tips to Paint like A Pro

. This project was a full-service remodel that involved a complete demo of the kitchen; remodels of three bathrooms; and the replacement of flooring, baseboards, trim, casings and crown molding throughout the house.

Whether the project is big or small, tackling a DIY paint job can be challenging. With any paint job, you want the results to be nothing short of perfection without having to spend hours upon hours on one wall. Here are 3 different tips that will help you paint like a pro!

The key to a quality paint job is a quality prep job.

#1: Invest Time in Preparation

The key to a quality paint job is a quality prep job. If you start painting with anything less than a perfectly smooth canvas, you can bet you’ll find yourself unsatisfied with the finished product. Any texture on the wall such as patches or ridges will be the downfall of your project. Sanding will level out any spackle or patches, and flatten out any texture on the wall. First, you will want to make sure to sand from baseboard to ceiling with fine-grit paper on a sanding pole. Apply minimal pressure on the pole as the head can flip and cause damage to the wall. Then sand horizontally along the baseboard and ceiling. Sand woodwork with a sanding sponge to get into the crevices. Lastly, clean your walls of any dust and residue.

A primer allows the paint application to go on smoother, more evenly and can help your paint last longer.

#2: Use A Primer

Once your walls are clean, smooth and texture free, you might be ready to start painting. However, wherever you repaired any problems with the wall such as knicks and ridges, or it has been over 8 years since you’ve last painted the area, you need to consider using a separate primer. A primer allows the paint application to go on smoother, more evenly and can help your paint last longer. Most importantly, it helps the finished product look better.

Good brushes and rollers will offer great coverage and a nice even coat of paint to your wall.

#3: Buy High-Quality Tools

Now that you have picked out a color and invested in high-quality primer and paint, tools are not an area to skimp on. The better the tools, the easier the application process will go. Good brushes and rollers will offer great coverage and a nice even coat of paint to your wall. Choosing low-quality tools may result in streaky or uneven spots causing you to have to go back for frequent touch-ups. Commonly, low-quality rollers and brushes can leave residue in your paint and on your walls. Also, be sure to invest in high-quality painters tape and not just use masking tape. Painters tape is the best option to save your walls from any drips that might seep through. Use caution when using tape as leaving tape on your walls for too long can damage your walls and your beautiful paint job.
